About Mt. Kilimanjaro

At 5,895 meters above sea level, Mt. Kilimanjaro is the highest mountain in Africa and the highest free standing mountain in the world. It is composed of three distinct volcanic cones; Kibo, Mawenzi and Shira. Uhuru Peak is the highest summit on Kibo’s crater rim, before this ultimate point is the Gilmans point, only 300 meters away from Uhuru Peak.

There are six official trekking routes by which to climb Mount Kilimanjaro: Marangu, Machame, Rongai, Shira, Umbwe and Lemosho. However, the most popular routes are Marangu with accommodation in shared huts with other climbers and Machame, by far the most scenic and steeper route up the mountain.

Although Mount Kilimanjaro climb is not very technical like other mountains around the world, such as the Himalayas, the high elevation, low temperature and occasional high winds make this a difficult and dangerous trek. You are strongly advised to join groups and be physically fit. Acclimatization is also highly recommended.
